Celebrating Pride in Guyana

The TIMEHRI CINEMA NIGHTS is back this June and celebrating PRIDE in Guyana. To honor the work of our queer Guyanese and Caribbean filmmakers, we will be presenting 4 short films exploring a variety of themes, from belonging, to coming out, to embracing our true selves, through the lens of the Caribbean experience. Once again, theis month’s screening venue is @FRESH, one of Georgetown’s favorite healthy food spots.

SUGAR FREE

Canada, 2023

Struggling to navigate adulthood and sexuality, Candy painfully returns to her childhood home. However after a moment of impossibility, Candy finds herself pouring her secrets out to a group of dazzling strangers.

An experimental and psychedelic short, music by Indigenous Guyanese composer(Chad Shew), written and produced by a Guyanese queer woman (Premika Leo) and directed by a Guyanese woman (Brittany Misir). A proudly Caribbean QTBIPOC short film both in front and behind the camera. The film features the talent of West Indian diasporic youth from Guyana, Trinidad and Jamaica, living in Canada.

About the Director
Brittany Misir, is an Indo-Guyanese Director based in Toronto, Canada. She has had the pleasure of working with a wide range of clients from Olympic athletes to restauranteurs; and everything in between! Misir attributes the appeal of photography and videography to idea of capturing the beauty of a moment and preserving it in time.

MADA

Jamaica, 2020

Mada follows three days in the life of a young mother named Faith, her mother, Ethel, and Faith’s son, Luther, living in rural Jamaica, where isolation carries its own sound. As the narrative unfolds, a simmering conflict over Luther surfaces and we are offered insight into two mothers’ conflicting natures and notions about love and protection.

About the Director
Joseph Douglas-Elmhirst, born in London, studied performing arts before moving to New York at the age of 14. He went on to study visual arts in Vermont. Joseph intends to tell stories exploring his Jamaican cultural identity through his voice, as well as the female voices of his family.

MANO SANTA

Puerto Rico, 2020

Pablo is the grandson of Don Isidoro, who is his town’s mano santa, or healer. When Pablo comes to visit the old man the two solemnly share their daily routines in the Puerto Rican countryside. Upon discovering the real reason for his grandson’s visit, however, Don Isidoro recognizes that he must accept the things he cannot change, and in doing so illustrates the true meaning of human understanding and sensitivity.

About the Director
Steph Camacho, filmmaker and photographer from Puerto Rico. Camacho completed her B.A in Cinematography with a concentration in Graphic Design from Atlantic University College in Puerto Rico.  Steph is known for writing and directing the multi-award winning LGBTQ+ short SAM (2017).  Their work has been recognized and awarded locally and internationally in countries such as United States, Peru, Australia, among others. Their filmograohy includes works such as: Masking (2019), Papo Amor (2019) y Aborto Libre Puerto Rico (2018).

ANTIMAN

Guyana, 2014

Anil, an introverted young boy, is pressured by his father to become a cricket player the way he himself was years before. Although a skilled player, Anil refuses to play and takes refuge in his love for Dano, an older boy in the village.  In order to attend the local masquerade and see the boy he pines for, Anil must win the cricket tournament.

About the Director
Gavin Ramoutar is a New York based film and television producer, and a native of Guyana. He is currently Associate Producer on the Amazon comedy series, Mozart in the Jungle. Gavin’s celebrated short film, ANTIMAN won the 2016 LGBT Special Prize at the Sao Paolo International Short Film Festival, and the 2015 Youth Jury Prize at the prestigious Odense International Film Festival. He is presently writing a feature length version of the film. Gavin most recently worked on Errol Morris’ upcoming Netflix limited series, Wormwood, and worked for two years with the development team of HBO’s Pretty Matches Productions, helmed by Sarah Jessica Parker. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from New York University Tisch School of Arts.
