Something More Than Masquerade sees a young Pierrot Grenade contemplate the spirit of carnival. Pierrot Grenade is a well known character and storytelling device within Caribbean folklore and masquerade traditions, often associated with Trinidad and Grenada and encountered across the Caribbean. This is intended as the first in a series of moving image works exploring Caribbean folklore and masquerade traditions, the retention of African masquerade practices in the Caribbean, and their relationship to resistance and rebellion on the plantations. Here we meet a young boy dressed as Pierrot Grenade as he reflects on how with contemporary carnival celebrations—such as Notting Hill Carnival which features—many fail to realise these origins.

Shamica Ruddock, is an artist, filmmaker and researcher often found working between sound and moving image. Through sound Shamica considers the ways Black diasporas are engaged and presented. Through film Shamica explores Afro-Caribbean puppetry, masquerade, and oral folk storytelling traditions.
Previous screenings include Abandon Normal Devices (UK), LUX (UK), and Bertha DocHouse (UK) . Group presentations include the Barbican (UK), Tate Britain Lates (UK), and New Contemporaries (UK). Solo shows include Treasure Hill Artist Village (TW) and South London Gallery (UK). Shamica has held residencies with Somerset House Studios, and is currently an Eccles Centre Visiting Fellow at the British Library researching Maroon sound cultures.
